Potty Training

Potty training will never be a one size fits all approach and there isn't an exact age for when children will be ready. The key signs we look out for are:

  • Child's communication is sufficient

  • Nappy dry for periods between 1-2 hours

  • Child has developed some dressing skills

  • Child is aware when they are passing urine or stools.

Potty training is not always smooth sailing, so we've collated further guidance below that may help.

Potty Training

ERIC have prepared a 3 step process for parents to follow which include Preparation, Practice and Perfecting. As well as other tips and tricks to help set your child up for success!

Potty Training with SEND

Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities may find it more difficult to learn to use a potty. We've gathered content from the NHS, Contact (Charity for families with disabled children) and ERIC which offer guidance on how to approach potty training.

Additional Resources

ERIC has made available a host of other resources online for subjects such as:

  • Advice on constipation

  • Bristol Stool Chart

  • Toilet anxiety and witholding

  • Night time wetting

  • Reward charts

  • Toileting at school
